Interview about expat life in New Zealand

April 4, 2012

A while back, ‘Moon Travel Guides’ approached me and asked if they could interview me for the new edition of their book, ‘Living Abroad in New Zealand’.

Well, with a name like ‘Moon Travel Guides,’ how could I say no?

Find out what I like about the rural lifestyle, what I miss, and what special expat tips I have in the interview, which you can read below.

And I swear, I don’t get a commission on new migrants to New Zealand. I just love this place!

January 1, 2012

Night sky with 2012 written in the skyHappy 2012!

On this day, the very first of 2012, I was curious to see which were the top ‘Moon’ stories from the last year. So, I took a look at the stats.

Below are the top 5 stories posted in 2011, based on page views. I find this interesting, because these aren’t the ones I’d choose. But there you have it. The people have spoken. And they love carrot cake!

Windy day on the radio

July 23, 2011

Radio New Zealand logo

It was howling a gale outside when Amelia from Radio New Zealand showed up at my door. We immediately headed out for a walk through the paddocks. She had a black box hanging from her side, and she was holding two very large, imposing microphones.

When the gusts picked up she would jump from one side of me to the other, trying to block the noisy wind with her body and always holding one of the microphones in front of my mouth. I tried to pretend like this was normal, and I continued answering whatever question she’d asked.

I was sitting in an internet cafe at Bondi beach in Sydney. Just outside the waves curled blue into the sand. Surfers had left their boards leaning on the railings of outdoor cafes to have breakfast. The sun was bright and warm.

But I was in a dimly lit room full of computers, trying to find out if I had won an award back in New Zealand.

My first radio interview

February 27, 2010
Kapiti Island

Kapiti Island at dawn

Back in January, I was interviewed for a Kapiti Coast community access radio show. It ain’t Oprah, but it’s somethin’!

Thank goodness Rick offered to drive to the Kapiti Coast for the interview, because I hate mountain roads. After nearly two hours of twisting and turning through two difficult mountain passes, we finally found ourselves looking straight out across the Tasman Sea from on high. The long, lovely shape of the Kapiti Island bird sanctuary lay the foreground.

You can listen to the radio interview at the end of this post.

Interview with a Martinborough runner

Running down Te Muna Road

Running down Te Muna Road (click to enlarge)

When the folks over at RunAbroad.com read my recent post, Running up Te Muna Road, they asked me if I wouldn’t mind being interviewed for their monthly ‘Interview with a runner’ feature.

I said, “Huh?”

I’m no serious runner. I mean, I love running but I’m a wimpy hobby runner.

Great news. I’ve just learned that ‘Moon over Martinborough’ is a finalist in the very exciting ONYA awards!

Moon makes headlines

October 29, 2009

Local newspaper Wairarapa Times-Age ran an article on ‘Moon over Martinborough’ last week, and I was slapped on the front page, top right.

They asked me to pose for this picture – sitting awkwardly on our fence, pretending to do a blog post with the olive grove behind me and a bottle of our oil beside me.

As if I always write blog posts this way…

I felt like such a doofus!

There was an absolutely enormous version of this picture on page 3, plus a cropped version on the front page.

Moon is NZ Site of the Month

October 7, 2009
Netguide logo

Moon over Martinborough has been named “New Zealand Site of the Month” in the October 2009 issue of NetGuide Magazine!

I was sitting at my computer at the government agency where I work when an email came in from someone in the Communications team telling me about it. Most of the people at work didn’t know I have a blog.

They do now.

Moon’s in a magazine

September 8, 2009

I’ve got great news. I’m a cover boy.

Wairarapa Lifestyle Magazine recently interviewed me for their spring issue, and they’re going to be publishing an ongoing series from ‘Moon over Martinborough.’ What’s more, they’ve slapped a picture of me on the cover!

Watch out, “Wairarapa’s Next Top Model!”

This was my first time being interviewed, and it was a very strange experience. Imagine: you’re sitting there talking with somebody over a cup of tea, and it feels like a normal conversation. However, there’s a tape recorder on the table, and any offhanded comment you make could end up in print.

Make your own olive oil in 23 easy steps

July 11, 2009

There are many ways to make your own olive oil. This is my own personal recipe. Feel free to modify it to make it work for you.

  1. Pre-heat your life. Marinate in thoughts of living overseas for years and years.
  2. Before your heart becomes hard, go.
  3. Count your blessings when the one you love agrees to join you.
  4. Wander the globe together. Live in Northern Japan, then big city Tokyo. Stir in trips to China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Philippines. Flavor to taste.
  5. Meet friendly, warm New Zealanders everywhere you go.
  6. Move to New Zealand. Because, why not?   Read the rest of this entry »
